What to Wear Your First Time Indoor Rock Climbing

One of the most common questions new climbers have is: what should I wear? The good news is, you don’t need fancy gear to get started—just a few simple clothing choices will help you climb comfortably and confidently.

Wear Flexible, Close-Fitting Clothes

You’ll be stretching, reaching, and moving in all directions, so wear clothes that give you freedom of movement. Think: leggings, joggers, or similar paired with a breathable T-shirt or tank top. Some climbers like shorts but I find, especially when newer that this can allow your knees and legs to get scraped against the wall.

Avoid anything too baggy—loose fabric can get caught in harnesses or holds.

Avoid Jewelry and Dangly Accessories

Rings, necklaces, and long earrings can be a hazard when climbing. Keep it simple and leave them off for the session. If you have long hair, tie it back securely.

Climbing Equipment

Though there is some specialised climbing equipment almost all climbing walls will provide or hire these out to you.

Climbing Shoes

These are snug, grippy shoes that help your feet stick to the wall better. Just bring or wear socks, and don’t be surprised if the shoes feel tighter than your regular shoes, that’s normal!

Harness

If you are bouldering you wont need a harness but for roped climbs this is essential. This provides a secure way to attach a rope to yourself (don't worry, the wall staff will show you how this is done) and provides safety in the case of a fall.

Chalk Bag

Some climbers use chalk to keep their hands dry and improve grip. If you’re just starting out, your gym might have communal chalk or offer rental chalk bags, but you probably won’t need it on your first visit.
