Northern Problems Bouldering Opens in Whitehaven

West Cumbria gets its first dedicated bouldering wall

West Cumbria's First Dedicated Bouldering Wall

Northern Problems opened its doors at Haig Enterprise Park in Kells, Whitehaven, on 30 June 2026 — giving West Cumbria a dedicated indoor bouldering venue for the first time.

It's the work of Iain Bisset and Kat Von Goldacker, who spotted a gap in the market close to home. Their pitch, in their own words: “Run by climbers, for climbers (and those who didn't know they were climbers yet).”

What's There

This is a deliberately small centre rather than a warehouse-scale one. “We are going to be a small centre, around 200 m2 of climbing surface and 80 m2 of matting, but with frequent resets and some good quality holds,” the owners said ahead of opening.

  • Around 200 sqm of climbing surface with 80 sqm of matting — bouldering only, no ropes.
  • Frequent resets, which matters more than raw square footage at this size.
  • A small cafe bar area serving coffee, cake and locally brewed beer for after a session.

That's a fraction of what a big-box bouldering gym offers, which is the trade-off a boutique wall makes — and it's why the resetting frequency matters more here than raw square footage does.

Why Whitehaven

The founders reckoned they were driving somewhere in the region of 8,000 miles a year just to reach a decent wall, with the nearest good options in Carlisle and Ulverston — both over an hour away from Whitehaven. Bisset has said he hoped the project would get more than just one car off the road in West Cumbria.

The wider climbing community pitched in: the structural engineer behind the build had previously worked on Eden Rock in Carlisle and walls in Newcastle and Edinburgh, and The Wall in Ulverston helped out with contacts and support.

The original plan was to open just after Easter, around mid-April. It slipped to the end of June — a fairly ordinary outcome for a fit-out of this kind.

Opening Hours and Prices

Northern Problems launched with hours of 12pm to 9pm, promising more times to follow. Those have since expanded, and at the time of writing the venue's Google listing shows later finishes on Friday evenings and a shorter Sunday. Hours at a new independent wall move around, so check the centre's own channels before setting off.

No price list has been published yet. The centre said pricing and details of social events would follow “very soon” at opening, and its website is still a placeholder at the time of writing, so it's worth contacting them directly.

Where It Fits on the Map

You can find Northern Problems' full listing on our Cumbria climbing walls page, alongside the county's other indoor venues. If you're travelling, the nearest alternatives are:

  • Carlisle — Eden Rock, north up the coast.
  • Ulverston — The Wall, at the southern end of the Lakes.
  • KendalWall — around 60 miles each way from Whitehaven, and a drive West Cumbrian climbers have long been making.

With Northern Problems open, none of those are a required trip for a midweek bouldering session any more.
